Definitions

Greenfield:

Land that has not previously been built on, usually outside the current boundary of a city, town or village.

Previously used land:

Land that has previously been developed and is currently vacant, derelict or contaminated, either outside or within the boundaries of an existing city, town or village. This is also known as brownfield land.

Urban extensions:

A development on the edge of an existing town. Although predominately housing, larger extensions may also contain new services and employment opportunities.

Strategic development area (SDA):

A new sustainable community of between 5,000 -10,000 new homes, together with a full range of supporting services and facilities, and sufficient employment land to be potentially ‘self contained’.
