Facts and figures
Transport and infrastructure
Much of Hampshire’s road network is currently congested at peak times and traffic levels have increased by 30% over the past ten years.
Railways are already congested, particularly in the main cities of Southampton, Portsmouth and Basingstoke.
Many parts of the M3 and M27 carry more than 100,000 vehicles per day and traffic on the motorways is growing by 2% per year.
Without investment congestion will be significantly worse by 2026.
If Hampshire continues to grow and develop without significant investment, at these levels of congestion, drivers would experience severe problems: the rush hour would last for most of the day, journeys would be considerably longer and the impact of poor weather, crashes and road-works would be more pronounced. Everyday driving would be like the M25 on a bank-holiday Friday.
Water and sewerage
Hampshire’s domestic water consumption is forecast to increase by 37% between 2001 and 2025. This is due to a combination of population increases and increases in per capita consumption.
The amount of water available for use will decline over the 20 year period. There will be less water available from our rivers as we cope with climate change and strive to meet EU Regulations whilst maintaining Hampshire’s high quality environment.
There are also issues with disposal of waste water as the population grows.
