This theme is about strengthening local communities. Community cohesion is a key part of the fabric of strong and sustainable communities. Social health and social well-being are as necessary to the quality of life for citizens as economic and environmental well-being, good health and housing and community safety. Strong and cohesive communities contribute to making an area a good place to live

A Sense of Place – Find Your Talent-PUSH project

Hampshire's school pupils were taught team-building skills in order to create their own film footage, developing roles such as researcher, camera person, presenter and producer. They were also given opportunities to interview people either in their community or at a particular cultural venue.

Older residents living close to a school found the young people intimidating and were worried about going out when they were around. It was decided to target the group of residents concerned, bringing them into the school to meet pupils and to break down barriers between the two generations.

‘Culture-all’ campaign

The ‘culture-all’ campaign, led by the Tourism Section, was created to help raise awareness of the breadth of cultural product on Hampshire residents’ doorstep including both County Council and non HCC sites and to inspire residents to take advantage of the local cultural opportunities available to them.

Village Community Grant Scheme

The Village Community Grant Scheme was launched in April 2008. It offers funding to rural businesses to help increase the use of village shops and to create new community-led village stores, particularly in communities which have lost their post offices.

City Space at Winchester Discovery Centre

When planning the refurbishment of Winchester’s lending library, Hampshire County Council's research identified the need for a place for local community groups to gather, take part in cultural activities and hold meetings. Winchester City Council invested over £1 million in the £7.5 million Discovery Centre project in exchange for City Space, a dedicated exhibition area within the refurbished and extended library.
