Energy Recovery Facilities (ERFs)
With landfill space in Hampshire due to run out in a few years, a different solution had to be found for disposing of non-recyclable residual waste. Energy recovery means that the waste is incinerated and then the energy created is utilised to make electricity for local homes. The three facilities together are able to process over 420,000 tonnes of waste each year, whilst simultaneously generating enough electricity to power 50,000 homes. The facilities are described in more detail on the Veolia website where you can also check the emissions data from the sites.
