Recycle for Hampshire

Why recycling matters

Recycling is good for the environment and the economy, saving money and creating jobs. Most of the recycling we collect from houses in Hampshire is reprocessed here in the UK using sustainable markets and put to the best possible use to make new cans, tins, newspapers and plastic bottles.

  1. Recycling conserves resources

When we recycle, used materials are converted into new products, reducing the need for raw materials such as trees, metal and oil, which helps save resources and protects natural habitats for the future.

  2. Recycling saves energy

Making new products from recycled, rather than raw materials, uses considerably less energy and also means that energy does not have to be used to extract and transport raw materials.

  3. Recycling helps protect the environment

Recycling reduces the need for extracting (mining, quarrying and logging) and processing raw materials all of which create substantial air and water pollution. In addition, as recycling saves energy, through recycling alone, Hampshire saves the equivalent in greenhouse gas emissions as taking 40,000 cars off our roads! So recycling is a really easy way to do something positive to help tackle climate change.

  4. Recycling reduces landfill

Thanks to recycling and energy recovery, Hampshire landfills less than 11% of household waste.
