Citizenship

Becoming a British Citizen

A new Citizen

Becoming a British Citizen is a milestone event in an individual’s life.

As a British Citizen you are joining a community made up of different backgrounds, cultures and faiths. To celebrate the occasion of becoming a British Citizen, the government introduced citizenship ceremonies.

Under the Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002, all applicants aged 18 years or over who successfully have their application to become a British Citizen approved must take a citizenship oath and pledge at a Citizenship ceremony.

If you have applied for British Citizenship and have had your application approved you will receive a letter of approval from the Home Office.

If you have requested a Citizenship ceremony in Hampshire you should phone 0845 603 5637 (call charges) to arrange a suitable day and time. Phone lines open Monday to Friday 8am - 8pm, Saturday 9.30am - 4pm

Applicants are required to attend a ceremony within 3 months of the approval being given otherwise a new application may have to be made.
