Ordering Copies of Birth, Marriage, Civil Partnership and Death Certificates

(For Hampshire Registrations only - excluding Portsmouth and Southampton)

To apply you must know where the birth, death,  marriage or civil partnership took place. If you do not know which registration district a particular place comes under you can find out by looking at the List of Registration Offices and A-Z of Parishes.

Civil registration records for Hampshire are held from 1st July 1837 up to the present day. For records before this date please click on the Family History link. See links for registration in·Scotland, Northern Ireland or Overseas.

For births and deaths that occurred prior to the 1st January 2008, and for all marriages and civil partnerships, please apply to the Registration Office (Register Office) covering the district where the events happened. If necessary it will be forwarded to the correct office.

For births and deaths that occurred after the 1st January 2008 please send your application to whichever office the event was registered.

You can apply for Hampshire Certificates by:

We do not have the resources to undertake exhaustive searches on your behalf. We will, however, search for the year you give and for a period of one year either side of the date given. (If we are unsuccessful and you wish to make an appointment to carry out a General Search please see the link for Searches and Fees

If successfully traced, certificates required for immediate use will normally be issued within 2 working days, and sent by first class post. Historical searches may take longer. NB: We do not charge for postage, but always welcome self-addressed envelopes.

If the birth, death, marriage or civil partnership occurred outside the Hampshire Registration District you need to contact the local Register Office to where the event took place. If the event took place in Portsmouth or Southampton you need to contact them direct as they are now Unitary Authorities and no longer part of the Hampshire Registration District. Alternatively contact the General Register Office.

General Register Office Index Reference numbers are of no help when applying for a historic copy certificate from a registration office, but the year, quarter and district are useful in the absence of precise details.
