Marriage

Marriage according to the law of this country is the union of one man with one woman, voluntarily entered into for life to the exclusion of all others. Marriage may be civil or religious. Civil marriages take place in Registration Offices (Register Offices) and Approved Premises (Venues) and are arranged through the Register Office that covers the area where you intend to marry. Religious marriages are booked through the Vicar, Minister/Priest or other Religious Representative who will advise you on whether you need to contact a Register Office as part of the procedure (please see the General Register Office Website for further advice regarding religious marriages).

For civil marriages there are specific legal and residential requirements which must be complied with. Anyone intending to marry in England and Wales should check that they are able to comply with the legal requirements set out under 'Your Wedding in Hampshire'.

Please note: Anyone who is not a resident of England and Wales should also check the section 'Are you subject to immigration controls'.
