Our responsibilities - Highway Maintenance

Hampshire County Council, as highway authority, is charged with looking after the highway network on behalf of the public. This means both maintaining its condition and protecting the right of all to use it without hindrance.

Some highway responsibilities are undertaken by other organisations District/Borough or Parish councils. Take a look at our responsibilities table for details.

Hampshire County Council is not responsible for:

  • motorways and trunk roads which are the responsibility of the Highways Agency

  • roads in Southampton which are the responsibility of Southampton City Council

  • roads in Portsmouth which are the responsibility of Portsmouth City Council

  • a small minority of privately-maintained highways and new roads built by developers which have not yet been adopted.
