Tables & Chairs on the Highway
Its pleasant to sit outside in the open air to take refreshments or have a meal and this increasingly fits with our climate in Hampshire. Highways are designed not just for transporting but fulfil an important social function.
Tables and chairs are allowed to be placed in certain locations on the highway but before they can be placed by the restaurant or café permission is needed. Permission is granted by the District or Borough council and applications should be made to these Authorities. There is a small cost associated with the licence application and a need for public liability insurance.
Hampshire County Council is consulted on the application by the District or Borough Council. It is important that adequate and safe passage is maintained for pedestrians with particular attention to the visually and mobility impaired and this is a key aspect of consideration by the County Council.
