Winter Salting

Hampshire County Council works to keep roads safe in poor weather conditions.  We cannot clear all roads and footpaths of snow and ice at the same time, so we  focus on the roads and paths which are used by most people.

Salting roads helps to prevent ice forming. This keeps traffic moving and assists in the reduction of accidents.

Hampshire has a relatively mild winter climate compared to the north of the country but this brings its own problems. The winter temperatures often hover around freezing point and these marginal conditions make life difficult for the weather forecaster and for us in making salting decisions. We work very closely with the weather forecaster to ensure that any weather changes are monitored and relayed onwards to ensure appropriate actions.

Further information on winter salting can be found in
the Winter Maintenance Policy.
