3. Structures database

3.1 A database of highway structures that fall within the definitions as set out in paragraphs 1.2, 1.3, 1.5 and 1.6 for which the County Council have some liability, is maintained and updated by the Bridge Client staff. Some small culverts and pipes (paragraph 1.4) are also included.

Private structures, including bridges owned by Railtrack Plc or British Rail Property Board and disused railway bridges which carry highways, are also included. Copies of these updated records are available to Highway Units on request.

The database shows the basic dimensions, form of construction etc of each structure and also indicates the inspection and maintenance liability of the County Council. The database records all bridges that are Ancient Monuments, listed buildings or structures of special architectural or historical interest. Structures in Conservation Areas and any special agreements with the Statutory Undertakers, British Rail, Water Authorities, landowners etc are noted where known.
