Highway Maintenance

Planting of new trees

The Highways tree maintenance budget is primarily for tree safety works. However, we usually replace trees that have to be removed for safety reasons.

However, it is not always possible or practical to replace every tree. Investigations are required to determine the locations of underground services and consideration is required in relation to sight lines and safe use of the highway.

If you value trees in your area please let us know. We may be able to target the area for new highway tree planting where funding allows. New planting areas are also subject to the conditions mentioned above.

To let us know, please use this reporting form, giving as much detail on location as possible. We will record your details and, if funding allows the planting to be considered, we will contact you to let you know.

If you would like to contribute to the planting of a tree, we would be happy to discuss this option with you. We will normally ask you to pay an contribution of £100 per tree.

Please do not plant a tree close to the highway yourself. All planting within the highway requires approval by the tree specialist team (Arboricultural team).

Most highway tree planting is normally takes place between October and March.
