Streets Ahead - Child pedestrian training scheme

Streets Ahead is a pedestrian training scheme for Year 2 children (six to seven years old) delivered in schools.  The scheme teaches skills for dealing with road safety situations including:

• crossing roads

• using special crossing places

• playing safely

• choosing the safest route

The scheme is given by volunteers who are trained by our Road Safety Team.  Volunteers are usually parents, LSAs, or Governors but can be anyone within the school community with an interest in children’s road safety (for example grandparents, other staff or the local School Crossing Patrol).  All volunteers are checked for their suitability with an Enhanced CRB (Criminal Records Bureau Check) before they can work with children.

How to set up the scheme

If you are interested in setting up Streets Ahead at your school, your first step will be to ensure you have the support of the Year 2 staff and headteacher.  Then you will need to look for volunteers.  For more information and materials to promote Streets Ahead at your school, please contact the Road Safety Team.

How to become a trainer

To become a Streets Ahead trainer at your local school you will need to be nominated by the headteacher and complete a form.  All volunteers have to be checked with the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) for their suitability to work with children.  Once the Road Safety Team receive nomination forms we will arrange a training session at the school.

I'm a parent, how can I get my child trained?

Your first step is to approach your child’s school and ask if they are running Streets Ahead courses.  If they are not, the Road Safety Team can assist in setting up the scheme.  Ask the school to contact the team for further information and assistance.
