Road casualties in Hampshire: 2006
In 2006, 4795 people were injured in 3709 accidents on Hampshire roads *see footnote.
618 people were either killed or seriously injured during the year.
Overall casualties have reduced compared with 2005, although the number of people killed or seriously injured has not changed significantly.
There has been a slight increase in the number of two-wheeled vehicle casualties, up by almost 5%.
Government targets
The Government has set a target to be reached by 2010 to reduce the numbers of:
- people killed or seriously injured by 40%
- children killed or seriously injured by 50%
- the slight casualty rate by 10%
Our targets
Early indications show we have achieved the target reductions for children killed or seriously injured and for slight casualties however we will continue to work to reduce this even further.
Our strategy and programme of works aimed at casualty reduction is set out in Chapter 5
of the Local Transport Plan
*Note on definition of Hampshire roads:
These statistics do not include accidents that occur on motorways or trunk roads. Hampshire County Council is not responsible for the management and maintenance of those roads (the responsible body is the Highways Agency).
