The RocDam Project

RocDam is a year long projectfunded by the HLF All Our Stories programme and coordinated by Hampshire’s South West Arts and Museum team in partnership with The Damerham Archaeology Project. Our project is about involving local people, organisations, schoolsand volunteers incelebrating and sharing the discovery storiesof Rockbourne Roman Villa and the prehistoric complex in Damerham.

There are a range of ways people can get involved in the project. Our research team of local volunteers have the opportunity to take part in a range of visits and training activities to build up a bank of knowledge and information about the two sites. This research will also take the form of a community display, so far titled, ‘From Farmer and Ferret to The Flying Archaeologist’.

There will also be opportunities for younger people to be involved, through several projects at local schools. The Burgate School, Fordingbridge, will be working alongside Chris Bennett from Southampton based community drama company, Orange Apples, to create a performance that brings the discovery stories to life.

There will also be a programme of free events that people ofall ages can enjoy, including a The Rockbourne Festival of Archaeology on 28 July, and the Damerham Play Day on 7 September. We will also run a programme of Family Sundays during the summer at Rockbourne Roman Villa, as well as many outreach activities, including activities in February 2013 at Fordingbridge Library and at Cranborne Ancient Technology Centre on 21 September.
