Leadership Development

Providing support for current and aspiring leaders at all levels in educational settings, including individuals, teams, whole-staff and schools working in partnership.

The Leadership Team works closely with schools and across Children’s Services to deliver strategic leadership goals.

  • Personalised and tailor-made development for individuals, teams, collaboratives and educational settings.

  • High-quality programmes for senior leadership teams and system leaders.

  • Support for learning in contexts, at home and in placement schools.

  • A brokering service to match individual need with provision.

  • Access to mentors and coaches for individuals and teams.

  • Access to experienced headteachers as role models and facilitators of learning.

  • Support from advanced skills and leading teachers, national and local leaders in education.

  • Leadership learning which focuses on qualities and behaviours for middle and senior leaders.

  • Signposting to important national research on leadership.

  • Access to job shadowing, role exchange and short-term secondments.

  • A development centre providing individuals with structured feedback on leadership qualities and behaviours.

  • Support for action-based research, collaborative inquiry and accreditation.

  • Workshops offering practical support for writing job applications and the National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) programme.

  • Resources and publications (loan requests made directly to HTLC).

 
  • Working in partnership with the National College for Leadership of Schools and Children’s Services, and the Southern Educational Leadership Trust (SELT) to plan and deliver development opportunities.

  • Established core programmes which have raised aspirations and confidence levels for senior leaders who have moved on to the next level of leadership, including headship.

  • An established Leadership Development Centre for middle and senior leaders which uses Hampshire’s leadership qualities and behaviours for assessment, feedback and action planning.

  • All provision is planned with experienced headteachers who also facilitate in many of the programmes.

  • 100% positive feedback from participants on all core programmes.

  • A wide range of approaches to coaching across the system to meet a variety of needs, including one-to-one, telephone, online, workshops and strategies for developing a coaching culture.

  • National and international speakers, including Sir John Jones, Sir Ken Robinson, and Professors Andy Hargreaves, John West Burnham, Alma Harris, and Michael Fullan.

  • Three years of sponsorship for schools working in collaboration to develop leaders in an innovative way according to their context.

  • Sponsorship of research associates.

  • Creation of a Talent Management System.

  • New headteachers’ induction and coaching in the early phase of headship.

  • Programmes for middle leaders, including Three Steps Ahead.

  • Aiming high: raising aspirations – a toolkit to support schools in identifying and growing leaders.

  • Creation of workshops for the ‘technical’ aspects of leadership and self-managed learning groups to deepen and extend leadership learning.

  • Provision of 360 degree tools for feedback and action planning.

  • Practical support for colleagues who have gone on to become NPQH graduates, Local Leaders of Education and Professional Partners.

  • Communication of all leadership opportunities through the termly newsletter Aspire.

  • Provision of opportunities for senior leaders to learn alongside colleagues from across Children’s Services.

  • The publication of a strategic framework for leadership development in Hampshire

 

A charge per delegate is applicable for conferences and courses, and a daily rate for a leadership adviser.

Customer feedback is used to improve and develop this service, in line with the Quality Assurance Framework for Services for Schools.

Mechanisms for collecting the views of customers include the annual satisfaction survey and complaints, compliments and comments.

The service also uses the following information to improve quality:

  • independent evaluator reports on specific programmes, eg: Future Change Makers;

  • National College Self Evaluation Form (termly);

  • monitoring bookings data on the Course Administration System.
