Ethnic Minority and Traveller Achievement Service (EMTAS)

Removing barriers and inequalities in attainment and achievement is a priority for any head teacher. Using our specialist knowledge, we support schools to improve educational outcomes for children and young people from Black, Minority Ethnic (BME) and Traveller heritages, including those learning English as an additional language (EAL). We are a cross-phase service working with children and young people from Early Years through to Key Stage 5.

    • Bilingual support in over 20 languages for children and young people at point of transfer into a new school.

    • A comprehensive range of services for children from Gypsy Roma and Traveller heritages including in-class support, parental engagement, transition and project- based interventions.

    • Profiling report and English as an Additional Language (EAL) assessment by one of our trained Bilingual Assistants.

    • Profiling report and support for Traveller pupils by our trained Traveller Teaching Assistants.

    • In class support for children and young people for whom English is an Additional Language.

    • EAL/SEN advice and guidance.

    • Advice for schools on raising attainment, achievement and attendance for Black Minority Ethnic and Traveller children and young people.

    • Bespoke training e.g. New Arrivals to English, Traveller Cultural Awareness and more advanced learners of English as an additional language.

    • OfSTED guidance, advice and training on closing gaps between the performance of Black, Minority Ethnic, Gypsy, Roma and Traveller children, and others.

    • Specialist teacher advice and support including advice in relation to bilingual pupils whose progress is of concern and Asylum seeking children and young people.

    • Parental support and family working including family learning, translation of texts and letters and transition work for individual pupils.

    • Support from specialist teacher with the delivery of the award winning Hampshire Young Interpreter scheme® and the Hampshire New Arrival Ambassadors.

    • Resources – loan of books, dictionaries and artefacts including a range of Persona Dolls representing the languages and cultures of Hampshire children.

    • Training for teachers, support staff and governors including accredited courses such as our Masters module in Teaching English as an Additional Language.

    • Phoneline service for parents and practitioners in a range of different languages.

    • EAL/SEN and Traveller advice phone line services.

    • E-learning CPD

    • Specialist teacher adviser delivering digital storytelling workshops, multilingual storytelling, Persona Doll sessions and the Advanced English as an Additional Language (EAL) learners’ programme.

    • Supporting parents to remove barriers to education, including visits from Traveller Education Officers, phone lines, coffee mornings and early profile meetings.
