South East County Leaders

New Chairman and Vice Chairman announced

A key partnership representing more than 10 million people in Britain’s largest and most economically successful region has a new chairman. Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead Leader, Cllr David Burbage, takes over from Dr Andrew Povey. His appointment was confirmed at SESL’s December meeting, which was also attended by Rt Hon Eric Pickles MP.

Cllr Burbage says,

"The South East is the engine room of the national economy, and is home to many of the UK’s most successful local authorities. By working together, the South East Strategic Leaders have a stronger voice and can ensure national government, business and others appreciate the key contribution we make to the wider British economy.”

The South East Strategic Leaders bring together 16 unitary and county councils, who are all committed to delivering efficient and democratically accountable services that meet the needs of residents. SESL priorities for 2012 include shaping health service reform; addressing the needs of an ageing population; delivering decentralisation and community based budgets; working to keep the economy of the South East thriving; and ensuring we have a fair and workable means of funding local government.

Cllr Ken Thornber CBE, Leader of Hampshire County Council, is the new Vice Chairman of SESL and believes the group is well placed to build on its success of developing innovative solutions to difficult issues.

"At a time of unprecedented financial challenge for local authorities up and down the country, SESL represents the voice of ten million people to help influence Government policy and benefit residents. The partnership also offers important opportunities for collaborative working, cost sharing and sharing of services across member authorities.”
