Hampshire Talented Athletes - June update
Isobel Pooley, High Jump
Isobel won the women's high jump at the BUCS Visa Outdoor Athletics Championships which took place in front a of 46,000 crowd at the Olympic Stadium. The event was held between Friday 4th to Monday 7th May and formed part of Universities Week 2012.
Jeamy Navarro-Schrank, Taekwondo
It has been a busy few months for Jeamy. She has been selected to be part of the GB Taekwondo newly formed cadet talent squad. This means she will be training in Manchester during school holidays at the National Academy where she will benefit from high level coaching and access to their support services.
So far this year she has won gold at the Swedish Open and silver at the Belgian Open. Both of which were European A-Class tournaments. She was also the subject of a feature on the ABC-CBN Television network.
Myles & Owen Richardson, Athletics
Myles and Owen recently enjoyed their first international success at the Malta International. Owen competed in the U15 age group and was 1st in the 200m (23.76s), and 2nd in the 100m (11.71s).
Myles competed in the U20 age group and was also 1st in the 200m (22.53) and 2nd in the 100m, with a time of 10.98s, taking him to U17 UK No. 1.
Leonora Mackinnon, Fencing
Leonora recently won the U18 British Youth Championships, held in Sheffield. At the UK School Games,which were held at the Olympic venues in London, she won gold in the individual event and was part of the England team which won gold.
HTAS athletes in the community
With the Olympics and Paralympics getting ever closer, our Hampshire Talented Athletes have been out and about in their local communities, as part of the Be Inspired 4 Life project.
Luke Hodgetts, Pole Vault
Luke visited Shakespeare Junior School in Eastleigh to talk about the highs and lows (pardon the pun) of his sport, pole vaulting. The children were fascinated to hear about the challenges he has faced and how high he has to vault.
Georgie Wingrove, Diving
Georgie visited Applehaw Primary School to speak about her experience of diving. She was also there to surprise Harrison Borrow, one of the pupils and present him with his certificate and Olympic prizes for winning the Hampshire Games 2012 Medal Design Competition. Harrison triumphed over hundreds of other children from across the county to have his design selected to be made into the medals that will be used at the Hampshire Games 2012 this June.
Caroline Brownlie, Shooting
The GSL 1st Denmead Scout Group enjoyed a visit from Scottish international shooter Caroline Brownlie at their Olympic themed activity day. There were a variety of activities for the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts to try, including spacehopper racing, cannon firing, assault courses, welly wanging and even a Landrover Pull.
Caroline was happy to join in with many of the activities and at the end of the day she presented gold medals to all the winners of each event.
Winchester Sports Festival
Jack Mitchell, Caroline Brownlie, Alastair Khakoo, Tressa Armitage, Thomas Graham and Louise Damen were joined by Olympic mascots Mandeville and Wenlock at the Winchester Sport Festival. Also in attendance was former world record triple jumper Ashia Hansen and GB Goalball players Adam and David Knott. The event held at Bar End provided a range of sporting actvities for people to try. Sport Hampshire & IOW were at the event, promoting sport and physical activity.
Joe Coombs, Canoeing
Joe Coombs visited The Crescent Primary School in Eastleigh to present at their assembly. Joe spoke about the Olympic and Paralympic values as was described as a 'fantastic role model' by the Head, Mr Dixon. Joe's talk kick started the schools well-being week at the end of May.
Hannah Hicks,Table Tennis
Hannah Hicks added the Wow factor when she visited St Francis School in Chandlers Ford, by giving one of the teachers a table tennis master class during the assembly. Lizzie Cutler a teacher at Francis commented. 'Her talk was great, she answered the questions well and really "wowed" the children when she demostrated her table tennis with a teacher - everyone was very impressed!'
