New Partnership Supports Talented Athletes

A new partnership between Southampton Solent University and Sport Hampshire & Isle of Wight aims to help Hampshire's talented young athletes fulfil their sporting potential.

Following the signing of a partnership accord between Sport Hampshire & IOW and Southampton Solent University, members of the Hampshire Talented Athlete Scheme (HTAS) will have access to the University's sport science support to enhance their athletic success

Professor Jane Longmore, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Southampton Solent University welcomes this new partnership: "The University aims to encourage the highest possible level of achievement by these promising athletes, as well as providing practical real world experience for our students through this scheme."

The University will provide specialist facilities, state-of-the-art equipment and sports science expertise in a range of disciplines including psychology, physiology, nutrition and strength and conditioning.

Working with Sport Hampshire & IOW's talented athletes will provide an excellent opportunity for the university's undergraduate students to gain experience of supporting the needs of Hampshire's talented athletes.

Julie Amies, Sport Hampshire & IOW Partnership Director says: "At this level, the costs of competing are very high and the margins between winning and losing are incredibly small. The high quality sport science support this partnership provides will allow our promising athletes to fulfil their potential, without being an extra financial burden to them and their families"

Team GB Wheelchair Rugby player Aaron Phipps, who receives support from HTAS and works with one of Solent University's senior lecturers in sport science, Dr Stewart Bruce-Low, says: "As someone who has benefitted from support from both HTAS and Southampton Solent University, I know this partnership will greatly help athletes to achieve their sporting goals"
