Coaching for Olympic Success
Three-time world champion and Olympic gold medal cyclist Dani King joined students, staff and guests at Solent University at the 2013 Young Coaches’ Conference last week.
The conference, held in partnership with Sport Hampshire & IOW, aims to encourage more young people to take up careers in sports coaching. The now annual event helps budding young coaches develop their skills and confidence – inspiring them to deliver exceptional sports coaching in their own communities and clubs.
Dani joined a host of other speakers to share knowledge and offer advice and support to students from Solent University and local colleges - including Southampton City, Barton Peveril, Peter Symonds, Eastleigh, Sandown Bay Academy, Bournemouth & Poole, Eastleigh, Portsmouth and Itchen - who are interested in pursuing careers in sport coaching, sport science and sport development.
Keen cricketer Jack Sheppard, aged 17 from Bournemouth & Poole College said, “It was great to meet Dani King, she's so down to earth and it’s really inspirational to hear from an Olympian of a similar age to us.
“I want to do a sports coaching and development degree, so this conference has been really interesting and given me a good insight into uni life."
In tribute to last year’s Olympic Games the mantra of the event was ‘Learn. Lead. Inspire. Coach.’ Students and staff took part in interactive workshops, panel discussions and networking sessions. These were followed by hands-on sessions in activities including handball, sailing, kayaking and wheelchair rugby.
Delegates also learned how to motivate young performers, coach disabled athletes and examine how sport can address social issues by bringing people together.
Greig Stewart,Coaching Development Officer for Sport Hampshire & IOW said: "Our partnership with Southampton Solent University continues to deliver exceptional opportunities for coaches to develop the skills and confidence to inspire more people to be more active, more often."
“It's been great to meet so many young people who really want to make a difference by sharing their passion for sport with people in their colleges and communities.”
Jamie Mackay, Partnership Development Manager from Southampton Solent, said: “We are really proud to be able to develop and deliver such inspirational events that help to raise aspirations and map out career pathways.”
