Young sailors gear up for Warsash Onboard regatta
Youngsters from schools around the Southampton area will be taking part in the Onboard Pico Open Meeting next Saturday 8 June. The event which is open to all Onboard young sailors as well as their friends, will be hosted by Solent University Watersports Centre, with racing provided by Hamble River Sailing Club.
Run by the RYA, OnBoard is a grass roots programme which introduces sailing and windsurfing to young people aged 8 to 18, through schools, youth groups and training centres.
The event is designed to encourage the progress of OnBoard sailors and introduce their friends to Stage Three and equivalent level of dinghy sailing. The kids have been learning and training at local sailing clubs that support the OnBoard scheme. They will be coming from neighbouring clubs and centres including Hill Head, Hamble, Lee on Solent and SWAC.
The young competitors will enjoy three short courses on the water in the Pico dinghies, for both single handled and double handed crews. A barbecue will be held afterwards for them and their families.
Spectators will get a good view of the racing from the shore and pier in front of the Warsash Maritime Academy. Registration begins at 9am and the first race will start at 11.45am.
Over a ten year period OnBoard aims to introduce a minimum of 500,000 children to sailing and windsurfing in the UK, converting over 10% of them into regular participants. So far it's nicely on track.
Location: Solent University Watersports Centre, Warsash
