HTAS Athlete July Update


Adam Jones won both the Hampshire County Combined Events Championships with a new PB and breaking the Championship Best Performance. He then won the Hampshire Schools Athletic Association Multi-event pentathlon. At the Hampshire Combined Events he also gained a new PB in High Jump which puts him 2nd in the UK for U15 boys High Jump. Earlier in the year he came 3rd in the England Athletics U15/U17 Combined Events Championships in Sheffield.

Sam Bass-Cooper jumped (pole vaulted) a new PB of 4m35 and has been selected for the English Schools (ESAA) Track and Field Championships. He will be competing for Hampshire Schools in the U20s men's Pole Vault. At the English Schools Track and Field Championships Sam was the only competitor in the lower year of the senior boys age group and he came 4th with a vault of 4m51. He has now achieved national standard (over 4.40) in his first year in the age group.

Olivia Breen has been selected to represent GB at the World Championships in Lyon in the 100m, 200m and 4 x 100m relay. She has taken 2/10ths of a second off her 100m and 4/10ths second off her 200m so far this season.

Louise Damen won the English National Cross Country Championships and the UK Inter-Counties Championships.

Sam Sleap won gold in the U23 Decathlon at the England Combined Events Championships in Bedford with 6975pts.

Kierra Barker was selected as part of the National Team to compete at the World School Games in Czech Republic. Kierra won the High Jump with a height of 1.74 and was 3rd in the 100m hurdles.

Eddie Jenkinson is the County Champion at the U15 discus (where he set a new championship best performance) and the javelin. He is also the Hampshire Schools Champion in the discus. He won the Southern Inter county schools discus competition and in the process went to the top of the UK rankings for the U15s with a throw of 47.26m.

He was also selected for Hampshire Rugby U14s first team and made captain in his first year, leading the team to a winning record in their games.

Emily Jenkinson is the South of England 800m Indoor Champion. She came 2nd in the National Indoor 800m and is the County Champion in 800m and 400m. She came 2nd at the National U20s competition for the 800m, in Bedford with a time of 2:05.72 - this was inside the qualifying time for the World Youth Athletics championships (2:08.00). She has subsequently been selected to represent Great Britain at these championships being held in Donetsk, Ukraine this month.

Isobel Pooley featured on the BBC at the European Team Championships where she jumped 1.85m to help GB to a third place finish overall in the premier division. She has just returned from Ireland where she competed at the Cork City Games in a closely contested competition to take the win ahead of some international rivals. In doing so, she jumped a season's best of 1.88m, a new UK leading mark for 2013. Her next major target is the European U23 Championships in Tampere, Finland where she hopes to finish in the top 5.

Andrew Douglas continues as he left off as an U13 topping the UK rankings for Pole Vault, now as an U15, with a personal best of 3.62m. At the Hampshire County Championships he made a new county record of 3.5m - 30cm higher than the previous record. At English Schools he jumped 3.3m - the same height as his closest rival but having one countback more than him, won silver.

Leanne Davies represented Hampshire at the English Schools Athletics Championships in Birmingham and came home with the silver medal and a new PB throw of 43.04m. She has been selected to represent England at the Home Countries Schools Track and Field International in Dublin on the 20th July. She has also been selected to represent Hampshire Cricket in the U17 squad as well as the U19 Hampshire Development squad in next Easters ARCH (Arabian Challenge) cricket tournament in Dubai.

Oliver Bromby won the Hampshire Athletics Championships 100m intermediate boys in a championship best performance time of 10.73. He then went on to win the 100m Hampshire Schools Championships intermediate boys. This secured him a place at the English Schools Athletics Championships where he won a silver medal in the 100m and a gold in the 4x100m relay intermediate boys. The silver medal earned him his first call up to represent England in the Schools International match in Dublin on July 20th in the 100m.

Myles Richardson competed at the English Schools Championship and made it through to the final of the inter boys 200m where he finished 4th. Myles also won gold as part of the Hampshire inter boys relay team, running 2nd leg.


Will Smith has been selected for the Great Britain Junior U18 World and European Championships in the C2. He has also been selected to The England National Training Squad, there are only 9 paddlers from England selected for this group.


Bethany Watts won bronze at Junior European Championships in Poland.


Hannah Leigh is currently playing hockey for the England U16 squad with 8 official national caps for England.

Simon Cardy has been participating in the British Colleges hockey team this year. They have played against England U16, Wales U18 and Scotland U18.

Ice Skating

Danielle Harrison won the Lee Valley IJS, Bracknell IJS, Murrayfield IJS and the Basingstoke Open.


Sarah Hill was selected to represent England for two European Cadet Cups in Kiev, Ukraine and Teplice, Czech Republic after winning this year's Cadet National Championships. She gained valuable experience fighting abroad, placing 9th in Zagreb and winning the Coimbra competition. Following these successes she has been selected to represent Great Britain at the European Cadet Championships in Tallinn, Estonia and has a provisional selection for the European Youth Olympic Festival.

Modern Pentathlon

Bradley Sutton competed in his first full Modern Pentathlon at the British National Youth Modern Pentathlon Championships in Birmingham placing a very credible 5th. In a very long day Bradley completed the following: fenced 38 bouts, came second in the 200 metres swim, show jumping - 12 sets of jumps including one double and a treble - 15 jumps in all, final combined event (5 shots/800 metre run - 5 shots/800 metre run and the final 5 shots/800 run).

Bradley won the Biathle GB Series event in the North West in Blackpool. Next he competes in the Biathle World Tour and GB Series event in Weymouth followed by the World Tour Event in Setabul, Portugal in July which also doubles as the European Biathle Championships.

Both Bradley & Jessica Sutton representing Team GB defended their Biathle 2012 World Tour Gold Titles in Tirrenia Italy. Bradley won Gold running 1,000 metres/swimming 200 metres/running the final 1,000 metres. Jessica won Gold running 500 metres/swimming 100 metres/running the final 500 metres. These two results helped the GB Team win the overall team trophy for this World Tour event.


Yasmin Parsons is part of Team Bath who won the 2013 Superleague. She was selected for Australia tour in April and for the Open European Championships. She has just been selected for World Youth Championships in Glasgow in August.


Xanthe Weatherhead and her crew qualified for Henley Royal Regatta at the Henley Qualifiers for the Junior Women's Quadruple Sculls. 4 boats pre-qualified so we were left amongst 17 crews, including crews from USA and Ireland, competing for the remaining 4 places


Devon Holt has been selected for the England U20's Women's Rugby squad for 2013/14. Devon is part of the Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE) programme at Hartpury College, led by England International Danielle Waterman. Devon has also been called into the Nations Cup squad to play South Africa, USA and Canada this month.

Charlie Stonehill recently participated in the BMW Wellington International Rugby Festival, starting and winning three international games for England U16 against France, Belgium and Holland. He was also awarded the Robbie Keast Bowl from the Hampshire RFU awarded for success in rugby and sportsmanship on the field.

Nick Blumlein has been training with the London Irish Silver group. He moved clubs to Havant and was selected for the County A Team.


Chloe Barr and Rhiannon Flack were chosen to represent England by the RYA in Largs, Scotland in individual sailing dinghies.

Harry Fitzsimmons and his helm won the Frensham Sailing Club Cadet Open. Following that they won The Alf Simmons Trophy at Parkstone Yacht Club. They also won the Tamesis Open on the Thames. Harry has been selected to represent GB in the Cadet World Championships in Belgium this month.

Chloe Martin took part in her first regatta this year at the ISAF World Cup event in Palma. She finished in the top and sailed the medal race, finishing 9th. In early May she sailed in the European Cup event in Garda. The scoring system was updated and only 6 boats able to sail in the medal race, unfortunately she finished 7th so missed the medal race by one place. In late May Chloe sailed her Radial at a European Cup Event at Medemblik, where she finished 9th overall. In early June she travelled to Carnac and won the RS200 European Championship. At the British European Cup event at Weymouth Chloe was in the top three for most of the week, but dropped to 6th in the medal race after some capsizing practice! With these results she was 4th overall and top GBR Radial sailor on the International Sailing Federation rankings published in June 2013.


Oliver Vass entered the Fareham Open and won a trophy for the best Junior Rifle score and came 4th in the men's competition. He earned a bronze trophy in the men's Three-Position Rifle (3 X 40) Championship. In this event he also won silver in the team event.

Caroline Brownlie won the British Pistol Club Championships with another PB and a new Scottish record. She has been selected to shoot for GBR in the last World Cup of this season in Granada, Spain.

Katherine Maskell came 2nd in the Women's Air Rifle at the Oldenburg Junior Shooting International Match in Germany.


Lydia Hume came 5th in the U19 girls British Junior Squash Championships and 6th in the Nottingham Junior Squash Tournament.

Jared Carter has been ranked #1 since March in the English Squash U13s rankings. He won the English Junior Closed Boys U13 tournament and the Welsh Junior Open Boys U13 tournament. He played #1 string for the England U13 team which won the Five Nations tournament in France and played #4 string for the Hampshire boys U15 team which won the county finals.

Table Tennis

Jonathan McMullan played in the National Championships and reached the U13's quarter finals. In the U12's he reached the semi-finals and got a bronze medal.

Letitia McMullan has just been selected to play for the England girls cadet team in the European Youth Championships in Ostrava Czech Republic 12 - 21 July. She has also been selected to play in the UK School Games in September for the South West team. She competed for England U14 Girls in a senior schools international in the Isle of Man winning a team gold for the U14 Girls and winning a gold medal in the U14 Girls individual event.

Amy Blagbrough came second in the English Schools U13 National Finals. She has been selected for the English Schools Team to play in the Home Countries International on the isle of Man at the end of July. Amy came second in the English Leagues Cup National Finals and won the Basingstoke Ladies singles title and in so doing became the youngest ever winner of the title. This season she has also won the Hampshire U13, U15 and U18 titles.

Tae Kwon Do

Jeamy Navarro-Schrank has received confirmation of her selection to represent Great Britain at the upcoming European Championships in Romania this August.

Brendon Tasker won two gold medals at the South Midland Championships in Kettering and has been selected to represent England at the World Championships in Coventry.


Emma Pallant started off her first full race season of triathlon at the Brit Superseries in Blenheim and came 2nd, sandwiched between two Olympians (Vicky Holland and Gillian Sanders)! She then won the Windsor event which was also the National Championships. She competed in her first international race which was an ITU in Holland and came 4th.

Laura Fenwick competed at the Blenheim Palace Triathlon, where she secured 8th place in the Junior Female Elite race, part of the British Triathlon Junior Super Series. She was 1st female and 3rd overall at the Eastleigh Aquathlon Series on 30 May and 1st female and 1st overall at the Eastleigh Aquathlon Series on June 27th.


Gina Lay has been selected to play for Wales U18 in the upcoming ASA interregional competition in Walsall. The competition is being used as preparation for their international Tri-Nations tournament against Scotland and Ireland in August at the Tollcross pool in Glasgow.
