Joe Coombs - Canoe Slalom
Joe competes in Canoe Slalom. He is currently ranked 7th senior and 3rd Under 23 in Great Britain. He has been the British Junior Champion and British Universities Champion four times and was 4th in GB selection in 2011. He has also been a part of the GB U23 team and the GB Senior Reserves. He recently visited The Crescent Primary School in Eastleigh to talk about his sporting career.
SHIOW: What has been your biggest challenge so far?
JC: Moving to Nottingham when I was 16 without my parents to get to train on the facilities at the National Water Sports Centre.
SHIOW: What is your favourite sporting moment?
JC: Standing on the podium at the 2009 Junior Europeans after a near perfect run and getting a silver medal with my teammates.
SHIOW: What are your top tips for aspiring athletes?
JC: If you enjoy it, put in that extra mile, and try and be the best you can be.
SHIOW: What one piece of kit, equipment or food / drink could you not live without?
JC: The obvious – my boat – otherwise I wouldn’t float! I get a new one each year that is custom built for me and hopefully is a faster design.
SHIOW: Who is your sporting hero?
JC: Chris Hoy, he is an incredible athlete and role model to younger athletes.
SHIOW: Who has most influenced your success?
JC: My current coach Mark Ratcliffe, he has given me support and guidance that has helped me up to the next step on my performance pathway.
SHIOW: The 7 Olympic and Paralympic values are respect, excellence, friendship, courage, inspiration, dedication and equality. What do these words mean to you?
JC: There all excellent words that embody the spirit of the Games and I strongly adhere to all these principles in training and in daily life!
SHIOW: What 10 words to best describe you?
JC: Fun-loving, conscientious, determined, motivated, optimistic, goal-orientated, focused, ambitious, competitive, relaxed.
