Thomas Allen - Fencing
19 year old Thomas Allen from Eastleigh is enjoying life as one of the country's best fencers. He competes in the Mens' Foil and represents Sussex House Fencing Club.
Currently ranked 2nd in the UK for his age group and 11th as a Senior, he rates coming 2nd in the Bratislava Cadet World Cup as his best achievement to date.
SHIOW: As we enter 2012, what are your targets for the year?
TA: I want to compete at the World & European Under 20 Championships and qualify for the Senior World Cup circuit.
SHIOW: The 7 Olympic and Paralympic values are respect, excellence, friendship, courage, inspiration, dedication and equality. What do these words mean to you?
TA: To me they mean lots of things but they all underpin what is great about sport and the Olympics.
SHIOW: Can you describe what it would mean to you to wear the GB kit at the Olympic Games in London?
TA: To wear the GB kit at London is every athlete's dream, its what drives me to get out of bed and train everyday, to get that deciding point. To be at London next summer would be a dream come true.
SHIOW: How has the Hampshire Talented Athlete Scheme helped you with your sport?
TA: The financial support has allowed me to gain valuable experience abroad bringing me closer to achieveing my goals.
SHIOW: What is the biggest challenge you have faced to date?
TA: Finding new ways to improve, push myself and find the extra 1% that will allow me to achieve my goals.
SHIOW: What is your favourite sporting moment?
TA: Watching Rodger Federer win the French Open and Wimbledon.
SHIOW: Could you give one top tip for aspiring athletes?
TA: You must LOVE what you do. Always be brave in everything that you do, whether that is in competition or in training. Never be afraid to try things that are new.
SHIOW: What one piece of kit, equipment or food / drink could you not live without?
TA: Italian food – because it is the same around the world and brilliant before competitions.
SHIOW: Who is your sporting hero?
TA: Rodger Federer – because of his mental composure and the way he has re-invented himself and found new ways to improve and win.
SHIOW: who has most influenced your sporting success?
TA: My first coach Patricia Hunt, who influenced my first successes.
SHIOW: And finally, if you had to describe yourself in 10 words, what would you say?
TA: Funny, easy going, random, thoughtful, methodical, emotional, reliable.
