Yasmin Parsons - England Netballer

Yasmin Parsons

Yasmin Parsons from Fareham is part of the Under 21 England netball squad. Yasmin had her first taste of competitive netball at the 2005 Hampshire Games and we caught up with her to find out more about her netballing successes and ambitions.

SHIOW: What’s in store for 2012?

YP: I have been selected for the Under 21 England for the European Championships, which will be held in March 2012 in Northern Ireland. This will tie in with the World Youth Championships in 2013, Glasgow. I am also currently training with the England National Squad twice a week.
I am part of the Team Bath Netball Super League squad featured on Sky Sports. This is a great level of netball; filled with higher competition and stronger players. Recently I was selected to go to the fast net grand prix with Bath to get a feeling of the new netball version but also get a taste of what competition we will be facing this year.

SHIOW: What other championships / tournaments have you played in?

YP: At the recent British Championships unfortunately we came second but I was delighted with being selected as captain.

SHIOW: What is your favorite sporting moment?

YP: My favorite sporting moment was when I was first selected for the England Under 17 squad, captaining the team and being named Player of the Tournament! But what topped that year off was beating Wales when we were 7 goals down in the last quarter and winning by 2! I think performance like that just show what a team is made of!

SHIOW: Do you have any top tips for aspiring athletes?

YP: The will to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach your full potential... these are the keys that will unlock the door to personal excellence. Success isn't something that just happens - success is learned, success is practiced and then it is shared.
Everybody has talent but few have talent with discipline.

SHIOW: What one piece of kit, equipment or food / drink could you not live without?

YP: My trainers, braces, pasta and water.

SHIOW: Who is your sporting hero?

YP: It would have to be Usain Bolt because he just came out and surprised everyone with his power and speed! He makes the 100 look easy!

SHIOW: If you had to describe yourself in 10 words, what would you say?

YP: Hardworking, never gives up, committed, strong, smiley, fun, dedicated, strong willed, outgoing, respectful.

SHIOW: And finally, who has most influenced your sporting success?

YP: Geva Mentor and my mum. At the age of 18, Geva was playing for England and ever since then she has achieved great success and I want to follow in her footsteps! My mum has always supported me and I've seen what she has been through in life, and no matter what's going on in her life she always finds a way to put my needs first. She is my hero!
