Local MP becomes Sport Champion for Basingstoke and Hampshire
Maria Miller, MP for Basingstoke has underlined her commitment to grassroots sport by signing up as a Parliamentary Sport Champion. Mrs Miller will work in partnership with Sport Hampshire & IOW to enhance opportunities for people of all ages to stay physically active and to help deliver the Olympic Legacy.
Mrs Miller is also the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, which includes responsibility for the legacy of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Sport Hampshire & IOW is part of the network of County Sports Partnerships across England which brings together and supports local agencies to increase participation in sport and physical activity.
Mrs Miller said: "It's absolutely vital that sport and physical activity play a central part in our everyday lives. The sporting legacy from London 2012 relies on the commitment and know-how of our coaches, volunteers and teachers, and they benefit greatly from the support of the county sport partnership and the network of agencies they work with. I'm fully committed to supporting their efforts and look forward to working even more closely in the months ahead."
Richard Millard, Chair of Sport Hampshire & IOW said: "We are delighted that Mrs Miller has made a clear commitment to supporting our work. Her support will be really valuable when it comes to making the case for sport and physical activity and bringing people together round the table. We look forward to working closely with Mrs Miller and believe we can continue to use sport and physical activity to improve the health and wellbeing of our communities."
The Parliamentary Sport Champion initiative was launched in June at a meeting in Westminster. Led by the County Sport Partnership Network, the aim is to ensure that Members of Parliament are closely engaged with local efforts to promote sport and physical activity.
