Alton Handball Club launch in November
Newly formed Alton Handball Club are launching in November 2013, with a special 6 week block offer funded through the National Lottery's Sportivate programme. Alton was first introduced to Handball back in January of this year through a beginners course co-ordinated by Alton Town Council. This was delivered by Olympian and Team GB Handball player John Pearce and the course resulted in a group of regular participants between the ages of 14 to 40 continuing to play on a recreational level. This group experienced recent success by coming second in their first competition hosted in Winchester in September and inspired the formation of an official club.
The fast-paced matches witnessed at the Olympic Parks Copper Box and Basketball Arena at the London 2012 Olympic Games introduced a whole new audience to handball. Handball pits two seven-a-side teams against one another and the object of the game is to gain possession of the ball and to score as many goals as possible. The team with the most goals at the end of the sixty-minute game wins.
Now the high-energy ball game is to become established in Alton, the club is looking forward to welcoming new members with a special launch offer. Participants aged 14 and over will be able to enjoy the first six sessions, which start on Saturday 16th November, for just £15. All sessions will be delivered by a team of qualified England Handball coaches and the club is delighted to confirm that they will welcome back Olympian and Team GB Handball player John Pearce, who will attend three of the first six sessions.
Coach and Club Welfare Officer, Thomas Litton, said 'We really want this club to be successful and if we can pull in the right numbers regularly then we can start looking at playing friendlies and, who knows, eventually join a regional league. The sky's the limit! Handball is a fun and fast game, suitable for men and women of all abilities and is a great way of keeping fit. I'd encourage anyone to come along and give the 6-week launch offer a try.'
Alton Handball Club has successfully secured funding through the National Lottery's Sportivate project which forms part of Sport England's mass participation legacy programme. Aimed at 14 to 25 year olds, Sportivate plans to capture the excitement of the London 2012 Games by getting teenagers and young adults more active. This will mean offering people the chance to find a sport they enjoy and with the intention of continuing to take part in sport locally on a regular basis.
The six week launch offer, starting on Saturday 16th November 2013, will take place every Saturday up until 21st December at Alton College from 12 noon to 1.30pm. The club will continue to train in 2014 with the hope that those who attend the launch offer will continue to play at the club on a regular basis.
The launch offer costs just £15 per person and is open to anyone aged 14 and over. The sessions will cater for those who are complete beginners and to those who have played before. Participants are required to book in advance.
