HTAS Athlete June Update
Olivia Breen ran a new personal best at the Loughborough Internationals, knocking 2/10ths off her previous PB. She is now ranked 4th in the world in her class.
Adam Jones won both the Hampshire County Combined Events Championships with a new personal best and broke the Championship Best Performance. He then won the Hampshire Schools Athletic Association Multi-event pentathlon. At the Hampshire Combined Events he also gained a new Personal Best in High Jump of 1.87m which puts him 2nd in the UK for U15 boys High Jump. Earlier in the year Adam came 3rd in the England Athletics U15/ U17 Combined Events Championships in Sheffield. At the Hampshire Championships Adam came 1st in Long jump, 1st in High Jump with a jump of 1.85m (2cm short of his Personal Best) and equalling the Championship best which was set in 1989 and 1st in 100m sprint.
Tom Frisby achieved a clean sweep in the Hampshire U15 restricted competition, confirming his position as Hampshire's number 1 U15 player. He won the Singles and Doubles with Lewis Sandy, before he and fellow HTAS athlete Libby McMorrow successfully defended their mixed title. Tom was awarded the Pennekett Cup by the Hampshire coaches for commitment to Hampshire badminton. Tom travelled to Jersey to compete in an under 15 Singles and Doubles event and the under 17 Singles. He won the under 15 singles, was runner up in the doubles, and reached the semi finals of the under 17singles were he lost to the eventual winner. Tom competed in the quarter finals at the Badminton England U15 Gold Star event at Cheltenham and won the U15 Gold event at the home of Badminton England, in Milton Keynes.
In March, David Hill attended trials for the GB Talent team where an International Classifier told him he had moved into the next Classification up, BC2. He has spent the last few months preparing for competition in a stronger classification. In his first game as an official BC21 at the Boccia England Nationals, David beat Dan Bentley, Gold and Bronze Paralympian, 4 - 2 and then went on to win the last 3 pool games. Unfortunately he suffered a narrow 4 - 3 defeat in the quarter finals but is happy with his 5th place finish in the stronger classification as a platform to build on for the future.
Cecilia Turk had a fantastic 30th birthday when she won the English National Championships for the 7th time.
James Clowes was invited to the Scottish National Championships and won all his matches. After this success he was invited to participate in the GB Boccia Talent Phase 2 programme. He is currently travelling to regular training camps at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield. At one of the camps James had the opportunity to compete against elite GB Boccia athletes, which he described as an "amazing experience". In May he travelled to Sheffield to compete in the Boccia England National Championship Finals at the Ponds Forge Arena. In his last competition playing for Treloar College he got through to the semi final and was drawn against GB elite athlete Zoe Robinson. He went on to be crowned National BC2 Champion.
Thomas Graham picked up two gold and one silver medal as well as three PBs at the South East Region competition. He then went on to receive two silver medals, one bronze medal and three more PBs at the joint South East & South West competition.
Daniel Faulkner has been selected for the England Under 21 training squad to go on to a tournament in Malaysia in September and then to the Junior World Cup in Delhi in December.
Richard Krogh had a very successful trip to Quebec in February with the England U13's Ice Hockey Team beating the Austrian National Team. He was appointed captain of the South West U13' Conference Team which travelled to Tours, in France, where they narrowly lost to the Midlands Conference Team in the finals after beating all the European entries. Richard received the All Stars Jersey award for best centre forward in his age group in Great Britain and has been invited to attend the England U14's trials in August.
Harry Boby picked up a bronze medal in Northern Ireland in the Under 16 and Under 19 sections. He then when on to win gold at a competition in Peterborough.
Annie Boby had an exciting month having taken part in her first overseas competition. She travelled to Northern Ireland and competed in the Under 57kg category where she won gold. She was also selected to represent Hampshire Cricket in their summer squad.
Xanthe Weatherhead competed at National Schools' Regatta on 25 and 26 May. She came 11th in Women's Junior 17 single scull category and 7th in WJ18 coxless quad. This was a great achievement as the team included a 14-year-old, a 16-year-old and two 17-year-olds competing against crews made up of four 18-year-olds.
Milo Gill-Taylor won the GBR Optimist Team Selection Trials for the second year in a row, qualifying for his 3rd World Championships Team in the Optimist Dinghy. He will be representing GBR at the Optimist World Championships in Lake Garda, Italy, in July. He has also qualified for the 2nd year as winner of the Selections to represent GBR at the Bermuda Gold Cup in the Autumn at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club. The top Optimist sailors from each country are invited to this prestigious event.
Ashleigh Holmes competed for Hampshire at the British Open Championships and won team gold. She then competed at ESSU (English Smallbore Shooting Union) Championships and came second in junior ladies.
Oliver Vass came 4th in the Junior Men's 10 Metre Air Rifle Championship at the British Air Rifle Championship and silver in his class. He also got a bronze in the Junior Men category at the ESSU Championship.
Katherine Maskell came 6th in Women's Air Rifle at the ESSU Championships. She then competed at the Fareham Open Championships where she came 3rd in Air Rifle Class A Competition 1 and Aggregate, 2nd in Air Rifle Class A Competition 2, and 1st in Ladies Air Rifle.
Kyle Finch had a very successful trip to Spain with the England Under 15 team where they won the European Team Championships.
Alice Tai set a new British record in February for the 100m back stroke (short course) S10 classification whilst competing at the Disability Nationals in Sheffield. She also broke the long course record in the same event at the British Disability International but it was taken away from her in the finals. She is aiming to reclaim the record at the British Championships at the end of June. She did manage to claim her first international medal in the 50m freestyle. At the time of writing, Alice has recorded the 3rd fastest time in the world this year for the 100 freestyle and 100 back stroke in the S10 classification.
Imogen Smith made her debut appearance for Team GBR at the Junior European Championships in Poznan, Poland. Imogen was the youngest competitor and finished in 14th place in the solo event and 16th place in the duet event. She achieved all her personal goals achieving her highest marks yet for a solo performance and a clean swim of the duet. Both routines have only been in training since the GBR selection earlier this year.
Letitia McMullan competed in the Polish Junior/Cadet Open for England Cadet Girls (under 15) and in June she is going to the Isle of Man to play for England in a schools international, for the under 14 girls team.
Tae Kwon Do
Brendon Tasker won gold and silver at the Welsh Tae Kwon Do Championships.
Aaron Phipps won 'Most Valuable Player' for the 2012/2013 Coloplast Wheelchair Rugby Super Series season.
Sebastian Round took first place in the Spring Series for Olympic classes on an RSX 8.5m. Sebastian achieved his first place by consistency over the series and he will now seek to capitalise on this success at the RSX Europeans at the end of June which are being held in Brest, Brittany. Along with Masters, Sebastian was the only other sailor to contest all three Spring Series weekends, and walked away with the RS:X 8.5 Series title for 2013.
