Term Highways Contract

New Term Highways Contract with AmeyWith over £33M annual turnover, the new 10 year Term Highways Contract with Amey is the Department’s biggest Highways contract and is also one of the biggest in the Country. The contract covers the maintenance of some 9,000 km of roads and nearly 2000 bridges. It is therefore a very influential contract that can play a significant role in promoting sustainable solutions.

Right from the start of the procurement cycle, sustainability was at the forefront of the contract strategy development. Close collaboration with colleagues from the Environment Futures and Sustainability team ensured that key messages were delivered to potential tenderers about our expectations. The contract includes the following key sustainability features:

  • Emphasis on ‘local’ solutions: local supply chain, local sources of materials

  • Key performance indicators linked to contractual incentives to promote innovative solutions to recycling and waste minimisation

  • Shared contract management groups with the Department’s other Highways contracts to ensure material use/re-use is optimised across the whole of the highways service, not just the maintenance contract.

  • Ongoing Carbon emission reduction is promoted by the use of incentives, thus promoting cleaner vehicles in the fleet and smarter journey planning across the service.
