Sustainable Schools

Upham Primary School has a dedicated 'Be Green Team' which includes school children, parents and teachers.  In June 2009 the school gained a Bronze Eco-Schools award, and hope to progress through to a Green Flag Award

Things Upham do already:

  • Light and computer monitors to make sure lights/computers are turned off when classrooms are not in use

  • Compost monitors to make sure fruit and vegetable waste is composted

  • Recycling monitors to ensure that recycling is achieved where possible

  • Planting to ensure biodiversity in the school grounds

  • A 'walking bus' scheme to encourage walking to school, and installation of a bike shed

Things Upham propose to do in future:

  • Research the greater use of recycled paper and paper towels

  • Add bird tables/feeders/houses to the school grounds

  • Researching what can be done with general food waste from school dinners, and aim to add another compost bin

  • Investigating ways of cutting down on heating costs, including the installation of thermostatic radiator valves
