Transport for South Hampshire

Freight Strategy

The two ports, in Southampton and Portsmouth, together with Southampton airport mean that South Hampshire is an important centre for the distribution of freight around the UK by road, rail, air and underground pipelines. The use of parts of South Hampshire for freight distribution is beneficial to the area in terms of providing jobs and income, but it can also produce problems such as congestion.

Transport for South Hampshire (TfSH) has, therefore, produced a Full TfSH Freight Strategy 2009 Download Acrobat Reader to view this PDF 3mb (a background note, Annex 1: Trends and Policy Background note Download Acrobat Reader to view this PDF 2mb is also available ). The TfSH Freight Strategy will facilitate the safe and efficient transportation of freight into, out of and within South Hampshire in order to support a competitive local and regional economy, whilst taking into account the existing and future needs of our society and the environment.

The strategy looks at the potential problems that can be caused by freight distribution, and aims to identify workable solutions in the freight action plan, such as encouraging the use of low-emissions vehicles to improve air quality. The Freight Strategy also endeavours to enhance understanding and communication between local authorities and freight and logistics operators, and raise the profile of freight within local transport planning.
