Doorstep Sales and Bogus Callers

Doorstep Sales/Bogus Callers

We must all be on our guard opening the door to strangers.

None of us can tell at first glance whether the person is a genuine doorstep seller or, in fact, a bogus caller who is simply trying to get into our home. Here are some simple steps we can all taken when we get an unexpected caller -

  • STOP - As you approach the door, think - are you expecting anyone? Use a door viewer or window to check who is at the door.

  • CHAIN - Put the chain on before you open the door. This will restrict the opening.

  • CHECK - Always ask for and take identification from the caller and check it very carefully.

  • Call the Police if you are not happy with the door step seller's identification.

  • Never keep large sums of money in the house and keep purses out of sight, away from the door.

  • Free security advice is available from the Crime Reduction Officer at your local police station.

  • You do not have to let anyone into your house. You must be satisfied of their identity. A genuine representative will understand your concerns and will give you time to check. Why not ask them to return when you have someone with you.

If you feel confident that the person is genuine you should still think twice before you buy.

We would recommend -

  • if the salesperson asks you to sign anything, always ask if you can have a copy to read first. If necessary, ask them to call back when you have read it. If they refuse to let you think it over, this should make you suspicious.

  • If in doubt sign nothing.

  • Do not agree for anyone to carry out work in your home until you get a second opinion as to whether you actually need the work done.

  • Even if you do sign a contract, you may have a 7 day right to cancel if you did not ask the trader to visit you. Contact Consumer Direct for more details.

Strangers at the Door

The best defence against a doubtful caller is a door viewer or spyhole and a door chain.
