Junk mail/Competitions

  • To reduce the amound of personally addressed junk mail coming through your door and/or nuisance telephone calls register with:

  • Allow an interval of at least four months before you see a reduction in the mail you receive.

  • To reduce the amount of unaddressed leaflets which are delivered by the Royal Mail, contact Royal Mail Door to Door, Room 130, Wheatstone House, Faraday Road, Swindon SN3 5JW.

  • Put a notice in your window or next to your letterbox stating that leaflets are not welcome.

It can take up to 28 days to reduce the number of telephone calls.

  • You may need to re-register after a couple of years.

  • If you still receive calls or junk mail from particular companies send a recorded delivery letter to them requesting that they stop contacting you. Advise the company that any further communication from them will be reported to the Information Commissioner.

  • If the companies continue to bother you, contact The Mailing Preference Service or Telephone Preference Service. Alternatively, call the Information Commissioner on 01625 545 745.

 

From time to time we all receive mail or phone calls which appear to tell us that we have won a prize in a competition or foreign lottery. The prize may be a holiday, car or large amount of cash. If this seems too good to be true, it probably is! They may ask you to send money to receive your prize or make an expensive phone-call (one that starts 09 ...). If they do, this will be a scam and you will lose this money!

Many of these scams originate outsie the UK, so are not regulated by British law. This means there is no control over what they can say and no penalties for taking your money and telling lies! Do not respond to any company alleging you have won a prize and do not send them any money. If you do there will only be one winner - and it will not be you!
