Asda Roundabout in Havant: transport improvements
Updated 15 September
Improvement works at the the roundabout at Purbrook Way and Hulbert Road in Havant are planned to start in autumn 2014.
Results of public consultation June 2014
The public response to the proposals was positive, but with comments received on a number of issues. These comments led to two main changes in the design:
Removal of the proposed works at the junction of Farmhouse Park Way and Purbrook Way (east)
Residents fed back to us that they felt the proposal for a raised part of the road at the junction of Park House Farm Way and Purbrook Way to address concerns of road safety and bus delays did not go far enough.
As a result, and to enable traffic issues at this junction to be properly investigated, this part of the proposal has been deleted from the current scheme and the junction will be given future consideration through the Havant District Funding Statement as funding becomes available.
Removal of the proposed bus stop and bus lane on the north of the Asda roundabout
Residents also commented that they felt the bus stop and associated bus lane on the north of Asda roundabout was not the best layout, with a number of concerns raised at the exhibition and in writing. They have now been removed from the design and bus users are encouraged to use the existing stops a short distance away on Parkhouse Farm Way or Purbrook Way, depending on their final destination.
The scheme is currently out to tender and this page will be updated once the contractor is appointed and when we have a confirmed start date for the works.
The improvements will provide:
- an increase in the size of the roundabout to increase its capacity and reduce delays
- new traffic lights on both Purbrook Way approach roads to the roundabout to reduce delays
- widening of the Purbrook Way (west) approach road to increase its capacity
- new pedestrian and cycle paths and signal controlled crossings to make it easier for people to cross the junction
- safety improvements at the Park House Farm Way junction
The main works are expected to start in early autumn 2014 and will take up to 14 months. The roundabout will stay open during the works.
The local community was consulted on initial plans early in 2013. Plans were discussed at a public drop in event in October 2013. A futher consultation took place in June 2014 and an exhibition of the plans was on display in the Havant Plaza from 4 June to 24 June 2014.
Following a successful bid to the Government, the Department for Transport awarded £3.7 million to assist in paying for the scheme. The total cost is about £5.9 million.
