Tadley Transport Improvements

Introduction

Tadley has been directly affected by the planned future expansion of the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) Aldermaston and the development of a new Sainsbury’s site at Mulford’s Hill (A340). To allow Tadley to accommodate the planned growth and mitigate the impact of the development on the transport network, developer contributions have been secured by Hampshire County Council to implement transport and access improvements within the town.

Hampshire County Council, in liaison with Tadley Town Council and Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, has developed a number of proposals to improve the community’s ability to access key services and facilities in the Tadley urban area by walking, cycling and public transport.

Work to Date

Following a number of site visits and discussions with local community representatives including County Councillor Marilyn Tucker, Tadley Town Council and Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council (Tadley Working Group), a number of study areas in Tadley that would benefit from transport access improvements were identified.

Potential solutions for access improvements were then investigated at these locations, and draft proposals for each area were presented to the Tadley Working Group and agreed in principle for public consultation.

The seven study areas and proposed improvements are:

  • A340 Tadley Hill/New Road Roundabout pedestrian crossing improvements
  • Rowan Road/Fairlawn Road traffic management measures to reduce vehicle speeds and through-traffic
  • New Road uncontrolled crossing
  • Wigmore Heath/ Shyshack Lane advisory cycle route
  • Franklin Avenue pedestrian access improvements
  • Almswood Road advisory cycle route
  • Silchester Road speed restriction.

Future Work

A further three study areas are currently being investigated for potential solutions for access improvements. The proposed solutions will require additional work and are likely to be available for consultation at a later date. These study areas are:

  1. Heath End Road Shops access and environmental improvements.
  2. Silchester Road/Tadley Common Road junction and pedestrian access improvements.
  3. A340 Corridor pedestrian, cycle and public transport access improvements (Blake Lane to Silchester Road).
