Objectives and outcomes
This training unit is designed to help you learn about musical feedback so that when teaching music you can apply generic principles about assessment for learning (AfL), effectively use the full range of people who can provide feedback to pupils as they work, and use a variety of feedback mechanisms to help pupils know how they can improve their work.
The unit will focus in particular on:
- the generic principles of AfL in the classroom and how feedback strategies based upon these principles can be applied to music;
- the characteristics of oral, aural and written feedback in music;
- the use of a variety of people to ensure that pupils understand how to improve their work.
As a way of identifying your current practice, use Activity Resource 1 to explore the principles of AfL. The resource explains what AfL is, and demonstrates how effective feedback depends on the broad characteristics of AfL being firmly established in the classsroom. It also asks you to reflect on your current practice, using a set of questions to identify how well AfL principles are already established in your department.
