Box 15 Victorian Wash Day and Cleaning

This box contains a selection of costumes and artefacts to represent the process of Victorian Wash Day. Pupils can explore and understand the difference between clothes washing in the 19th century and today. This box is useful as support for a more an in-depth study of Washing and Cleaning, but may also be used as example of everyday life.

Ideal for use with Key Stage 2, years 5 and 6

Key learning objectives

  • History: To enable pupils to explore key themes linked to Victorian Britain through handling costume and real and replica artefacts and by taking part in group activities.

  • Washday artefacts

    Speaking and Listening: To encourage pupils to work effectively as a member of a group, using speaking and listening skills.
  • Literacy: To explore the importance of Wash day in Victorian Times using literary resources
  • Citizenship: To encourage pupils to think about respect for property and to share their understanding about a particular topic.

Box contents

  • Costume and artefacts include flat irons, embroidered petticoat, bloomers, dolly pegs, soap, carpet beater, tablecloth, mob cap and apron and a selection of maids tools.
  • Resources include books, labels  and Hampshire approach to history booklet.

Boxes must be collected on Monday between 12 noon and 4.30pm, and returned on Friday before 4.30pm
