Box 19 Going to the Seaside: Victorian Seaside Holidays

This Box looks at Seaside holidays in the Victorian period using a selection of costumes and artefacts. Pupils can explore the kinds of clothing worn on the beach and discuss the games and activities children played. This is useful resource for comparing holidays today and over a hundred years ago, and can be used throughout the topic of seaside holidays.

Key learning objectives

  • History: To enable pupils to explore what seaside holidays were like in the past by handling costumes and artefacts, and by taking part in group activities.

Also links to unit 11: What was it like for children living in Victorian Britain?

  • Speaking and Listening: To encourage pupils to work effectively as a member of a group, using speaking and listening skills.
  • Literacy: To explore seaside holidays using a number of different literary sources.

Box contents

  • Costumes and artefacts include a Victorian two piece swimsuit, shells, button hook, pennies, marbles, cotton towel, sunhat, kid gloves and books.
  • Resources include Posters, books, videos, pictures, photographs and activity suggestions.
 

Hiring the Talking Boxes

Boxes must be collected on Monday between 12 noon and 4.30pm, and returned on Friday before 4.30pm
