Box 24 Florence Nightingale
Florence Nightingale is an important individual in history and this box contains all the resources you’ll need to illustrate this to your pupils. The box includes a full outfit for Florence Nightingale which could be used as part of a role play exercise, where one child may take the role of Florence and have her classmates interview her about her experiences as a Nurse during the Crimean war. Artefacts are also included to illustrate the difference between the health service in Florence’s time and today.

Key learning objectives
- History: To enable pupils to explore what life was like for Florence Nightingale during the Crimean War, by handling artefacts and costumes and by taking part in group activities.

- Speaking and Listening: To encourage pupils to work effectively as a member of a group using speaking and listening skills.
- Literacy: To explore the role of Florence Nightingale in the Crimean War using a variety of literary sources.

Box contents
- Costume of Florence Nightingale and items she would have used with wounded soldiers, a modern nurses uniform and a selection of objects from a modern hospital.
- Resources include photographs, letters, training pamphlet, postcard, Florence’s certificate, and audio tape, video, labels for display and books.
Hiring the Talking Boxes
Boxes must be collected on Monday between 12 noon and 4.30pm, and returned on Friday before 4.30pm
