Box 28 Howard Carter’s Suitcase

Howard Carter’s suitcase offers pupils a glimpse at archaeology in the early part of the 20th century and reveals the kinds of objects Howard Carter uncovered during his excavations in Egypt. This box is useful as support on the topic of Ancient Egypt and may also be used as a good introductory resource, prompting pupils to consider the kinds of tools used by modern archaeologists in Egypt today.

Key learning objectives
- History: To enable pupils to explore how Ancient Egyptian artefacts were discovered in the early part of the 20th century by handling artefacts and clothing, and by taking part in group activities.

- Artefacts and clothing include Howard Carter’s panama hat, cravat, shirt, stiff collar and collar studs, trowel, glasses, Shabtis, scarab beetle, cartouche, statuettes, necklace and Canopic jar.
