Box 3 The Aztecs
The Aztec box is useful as a means of studying ancient civilisations throughout the world. This box has a selection of costumes and artefacts which can be used as part of role play based activities as well as interpretive studies of different members of Aztec society.
Ideal for use with Key Stage 2, years 5 and 6
Key learning objectives
- History: To enable pupils to explore what life was like for the Aztecs by handling costumes and replica artefacts, and by taking part in group activities.
Links to unit 16 of the QCA scheme of work: How can we find out about the Indus Valley Civilisation? (This framework can be applied to other ancient civilisations)
- Speaking and Listening: To encourage pupils to work efficiently as a member of a group, using speaking and listening skills.
- Literacy: To explore Aztec life using books and pictures.
- Citizenship: To understand the differences between societies throughout the world, particularly those very different from ourselves.

Box contents
- Costumes include a red and orange theatrical costume, a woman’s tunica nd wraparound skirt and a man’s loin cloth and cloak.
- Artefacts include statuette, an Aztec instrument, Bark paper, a Rainmaker’s stick, a Calendar stone and a death mask.
- Resources include books, pictures and poster, Labels and information packs
Hiring the Talking Boxes
Boxes must be collected on Monday between 12 noon and 4.30pm, and returned on Friday before 4.30pm
