Box 7 Romans Vs Celts

This box contains a selection of costumes and artefacts to demonstrate the difference between the Roman invaders and the Celts. The artefacts represent the kinds of objects used by Romans settlers in everyday life. This box would be useful for a more in depth study of the effect of the Roman invasion of Britain and who opposed it.

Ideal for use with Key Stage 2, years 3 and 4

Key learning objectives

• History: enable pupils to explore key themes in the study of invaders and settler in Britain, particularly in the Roman period, by wearing costume and handling replica artefacts, as well as taking part in group activities.

• Speaking and Listening: To encourage pupils to work effectively as a member of a group using speaking and listening skills during role play activities.
• Literacy: To explore life in Roman times through reading secondary resources.

• Costumes include a Roman soldier, a Celtic warrior and Boudicca.
• Genuine artefacts include pieces of fluepipe, mosaic tesserae and pottery. Replica artefacts include a pottery lamp, coin, knucklebones game (played by roman soldiers and children) glass marbles and wax writing tablets and stylus.
