Box 9 A Saxon Dig
This box provides pupils with an opportunity to experience archaeology first hand by interpreting a selection of Saxon artefacts. Pupils can use the resources provided in the box to act as archaeologists and create a record of objects uncovered from a local Saxon excavation.
Ideal for use with Key Stage 2, years 3 and 4
Key learning objectives
- History: To enable pupils to explore what life was like in Viking Britain by handling replica and real artefacts and by taking part in a class excavation.
Links with unit 6b of the QCA scheme of work: why have people invaded and settled in Britain in the past? An Anglo-Saxon Case Study.
- Speaking and Listening: To encourage pupils to work effectively as a member of a group using speaking and listening skills.
- Literacy: To explore life in Anglo-Saxon times through secondary sources.
- Citizenship: To understand the differences between life in Anglo-Saxon Britain and life today through handling replica and real artefacts.

Box contents
- Artefacts include a spindle whorl, brass buckle, needle, beads, brooches, bone comb, pottery fragments, and animal bones.
- Resources include a time line, labels, rim chart for identifying pottery fragments, pictures and accompanying notes.
Hiring the Talking Boxes
Boxes must be collected on Monday between 12 noon and 4.30pm, and returned on Friday before 4.30pm
