Box 9 A Saxon Dig

This box provides pupils with an opportunity to experience archaeology first hand by interpreting a selection of Saxon artefacts. Pupils can use the resources provided in the box to act as archaeologists and create a record of objects uncovered from a local Saxon excavation.

  • History: To enable pupils to explore what life was like in Viking Britain by handling replica and real artefacts and by taking part in a class excavation.

Box contents

  • Artefacts include a spindle whorl, brass buckle, needle, beads, brooches, bone comb, pottery fragments, and animal bones.
  • Resources include a time line, labels, rim chart for identifying pottery fragments, pictures and accompanying notes.
