Waterlooville Household Waste Recycling Centre has moved!

New modern HWRCs are bigger and easier to use than their predecessors

Waterlooville’s brand new Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) is now open. The new facility, which has been built within the West of Waterlooville Major Development Area at Old Park Farm, opened to the public on 16 January 2013 and has replaced the previous Waterlooville HWRC which was located on Hambledon Road.

The former site was very small and no longer adequate for the amount of usage it received. As a single-level site, it had to be temporarily closed for health and safety reasons every time a bin is serviced which contributed to localised traffic congestion during busy periods such as weekends. It was also situated next to a busy retail park which further added to the congestion in the surrounding area.

Planning permission for the relocated HWRC was granted in September 2011 which is the largest of its kind in Hampshire. The main features of the new facility include:

a separate upper area exclusively for householders to use with the bins at a lower level so steps will no longer need to be used
a separate lower area for container servicing vehicles to use which will mean no more temporary site closures whilst containers are serviced
a dedicated internal stacking lane to eliminate the queueing of traffic outside of the site
a significant increase in the number of waste container bays allowing for more bins onsite
a significant increase in the number of customer parking spaces
provision of two large upper storage areas, one at each end of the waste container bays, improving the operational layout of the site and providing additional storage facilities for recyclable materials.

Overall the new HWRC is quicker, easier and safer for customers to use.

With the opening of the new HWRC, the old site in Hambledon Road has been permanently closed and is expected to be used for retail purposes. Highway signs have been put in place to direct people to the new site which was constructed by Colas Ltd, working to approved 'Considerate Contractor' guidelines.

Please note that the area surrounding the new site is still part of a new housing development site, so the access road to the HWRC will have a temporary road surface and no road markings until housing construction is complete. Access to the HWRC is via Darnel Road / Auger Row only - full directions are available. Construction traffic will be separated from traffic coming to the new HWRC by fencing. There is strictly no pedestrian access.

Despite the rather wet summer, construction was completed to schedule. The main construction was finished by the middle of December 2012, with installation of site furniture, signs and utilities taking place ahead of mid January ready for the site to be opened to the public.
