Our performance
Hampshire’s recycling rate rose again last year to 36.7%, marking a significant step towards reaching our target of 40% by 2010. This 4.9% increase on the previous year is attributable to numerous factors such as the introduction of Alternate Weekly Collections (AWC) in a number of areas which resulted in an extra 5,500 tonnes of kerbside recycling. The recycling rate at our Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) rose considerably to over 47,000 tonnes, an increase of 18,000 tonnes on the previous year. This rise is largely due to the introduction of wood bins which accounted for 12,000 tonnes but there have also been marked increases in other materials such as card and metal. Our network of Household Waste Recycling Centres were busier than ever last year. The 24 sites took in over 225,000 tonnes of rubbish and successfully recycled 56% of it. The site at Somerley, tops our table with an impressive recycling rate of 66%
This recycling rate of 36.7% together with our three Energy Recovery Facilities (ERFs) enabled us to divert 84.5% of household waste away from landfill, establishing Hampshire as the top performing county council in this area.
