The Gallery at Winchester Discovery Centre
Faster, Higher
26 May – 15 July
Faster, Higher is a multi-screen video installation by the artist susan pui san lok. Commissioned to coincide with the 2008 Beijing Olympics, while resonating equally powerfully in the lead-up to London 2012, the piece combines rarely-seen archive material (drawing on Chinese documentary sources and evoking China’s ambiguous relationship to the Games), with footage filmed around the Olympic site in London. Spotlighting the exertions and exhortations of individual athletes training for and competing in a succession of Olympic events, Faster, Higher contrasts their single-minded endeavour and commitment with the play of national and political aspirations that has become an increasing part of the Olympic spectacle.

The five-screen presentation of the work encompasses the viewer creating a mesmerising and immersive experience. Through the artist’s skilful editing, juxtaposing and repeating the imagery and sounds, we are taken on a journey of celebration and contemplation, referencing the past and the future, achievement and sacrifice.
A number of Olympic-themed children's workshops are taking place in the Discovery Centre during the Olympics Games. Visit our What's On pages to find out more.
