School session plans - Marvellous Matisse exhibition

A fantastic opportunity for KS1 and KS2 pupils to explore the work of Henri Matisse - one of the 20th century's most influential artists.

A two hour session for one class of KS1, led by an Interpreter- Demonstrator.We request a minimum of 5 accompanying adult helpers to support this session.

Organisation

During the session you will need to divide into 5 groups to move around the activities. Each group will be led by one of your adult helpers and our Interpreter-Demonstrator will facilitate the session. It’s helpful for the Interpreter-Demonstrator if pupils are wearing name stickers.

Session objective

Through discussion, problem solving and team work pupils will investigate and celebrate the work of the French painter, sculptor and designer Henri Matisse, one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.

Introduction

Welcome to Winchester Discovery Centre. Introduction to The Gallery. Health and Safety issues.

Introduction to the exhibition, Matisse - Drawing with Scissors. Discussion about why Matisse began to use cut-outs in his work.

Pupils will be invited to spend 10 -15 minutes exploring the exhibition with the help of an activity. Working in small groups, they will be given a riddle to solve – the answer will be one of the works on display.

Group Activities

Spray of Flowers!

Pupils will discuss Matisse’s love of nature and then produce a  group picture using cut out leaves.

The Snail!

Pupils will be invited to look at Matisse’s famous work The Snail and  will then work as a group, with foam shapes, to produce their own version.

Sort It!

Pupils will be asked to look at several different works from the exhibition and then sort them under the headings – Plants, Animals and People.

Artist’s Palette!

Pupils will look at colour wheels and find out about primary and secondary colours.

The Sea !

Pupils will look at  Polynesia – the Sea  and, as a class, create their own work entitled - La Mer (The Sea) - using the same techniques.

Plenary

Groups will come back together with the Interpreter-Demonstrator to discuss what they have found out about Matisse, their likes and dislikes and showcase their artwork.

Ivy in Flower

Matisse was strongly influenced by the natural world.

Pupils will explore Ivy in Flower and then, as a group, produce their own interpretation of a vase of flowers.

Pupils will be invited to look at Matisse’s famous work The Snail and  will then work in pairs to produce their own version, using foam shapes.

Sort It!

Pupils will be asked to look at several different works of Matisse and then sort them under the headings – Natural Forms, Music and Dance, Still Life, Travel

Artist’s Palette!

Pupils will look at colour wheels and find out about primary, secondary and complimentary colours.

Create!

Pupils will look at Polynesia –The Sea and as a group create their own work using the same techniques, entitled The Sky

Groups will come back together with the Interpreter-Demonstrator to discuss what they have found out about Matisse, their likes and dislikes and showcase their artwork.
