If you are a parent or carer concerned about your child’s weight there are various resources and services available to help you.  

Child Weight Management Services (MEND Programmes)

What is the MEND?

MEND 5-7 is a healthy lifestyle programme designed to help children aged 5-7 and their families manage their weight. The programme consists of groups of families taking part in weekly 1 hour 45 minute sessions for ten weeks. Sessions include healthy eating, increasing active play and how to encourage healthy behaviour.

MEND 7-13 is a family-based programme that has been designed to help overweight and obese children and their families by improving health, fitness and self-esteem. The programme consists of groups of families taking part in weekly 1 to 2 hour sessions twice a week for ten weeks. Sessions include increasing physical activity, planning a balanced diet and behaviour change.

What is happening in Hampshire?

Mytime Active has been commissioned to provide MEND programmes for Hampshire families.

At least one MEND 5-7 programme will be delivered in each local authority area by July 2014. In addition, MEND 7-13 will run in Basingstoke & Deane, Rushmoor, Gosport and Havant local authority areas.

How can I access the MEND programme on behalf of my child or children?

Professionals such as GPs, school nurses and teachers can refer a family directly via the MEND website. However, parents and carers are also able to refer their child to this service. If you feel that your child needs help to achieve a healthy weight, you can contact MEND directly by calling 0800 2300 263, which is a free phone number or visit the Join a Programme page - where you will be able to search for a local programme within Hampshire.

 

Health Visiting Service

If your child is under 5 years, you will have automatically been referred to the health visiting service by your midwife.  Your local health visitor will be able to advise on your child’s growth and development and you should contact them in the first instance.

School Nursing Service

The School Nursing Service in Hampshire is a key support for parents and carers of school age children.

Included within this service is a health review during your child’s first year of school in Year R and advice on your child’s growth and development, healthy eating and how to encourage them to be more active.
